Acupuncture is a method that can alleviate pain using fine filiform needles. The needles are inserted into critical points in the body. Acupuncture can also be used for therapeutic purposes. The term acupuncture was derived from the Latin "acus", which means, "needle" and "pungere" which means "to prick". Acupuncture is an effective way to heal back pain, headache, migraine and some sports injuries.

Furthermore, it can also aid in treating anxiety, insomnia, digestive problems, abdominal, menstrual cramps, weight control infertility and so on. Though it uses needles, acupuncture is still considered the safest and most efficient natural therapy that can also enhance well being. Acupuncture is said to be an efficient way of treating various form of chronic pain. It can also be used to treat postoperative and chemotherapy nausea and vomiting, relating to pregnancy and dental pain.

Gate Theory of Pain is one of the theories that clarify why acupuncture works effectively in curing pain. It was first proposed in 1965. It states that acupuncture works through the nervous system in which there are fibers that send out and inhibit pain. The one that is responsible for sending out messages to the brain related to pain is the substancia gelatinosa.

Substancia gelatinosa sends out two types of fibers: A-beta and C nerve fibers. A-beta fibers are large fiber that has low volt threshold and performs faster. Unlike A-beta, C fibers are smaller and have high volt threshold that performs slowly. Acupuncture acts on these fibers and prevents these signals from reaching the brain resulting to less pain sensation.

Some conditions commonly treated with acupuncture are neck or cervical pain, shoulder pain, lower back pain, sciatica, hip pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome, sinus problems, arthritic pain, jaw and face pain, irritable bowel syndrome, motor vehicle injuries, bladder infection, stress related disorder, menstrual problems, smoking addiction, obesity and infertility.

The chief benefits of acupuncture are: it is a drug-free pain relief, it helps preven against diseases, it heals the causes along with the symptoms, it is a holistic method to cure illness, it links body, mind and emotion plus it treats many common ailments effectively.
