Causes of Groin Pain in Men

Groin pain in men refers to the discomfort experienced in the lower abdominal area and between the legs. We shall focus on the causes of groin pain in men in the following article.


Men are more likely to suffer from groin pain than women. Most of the time, people jump to the conclusion that the causes of groin pain in men refers to the problems associated with the scrotum sac and testicles. But, this is not always the case and can indicate a number of different problems. If one is suffering from groin pain, then they should address the issue as early as possible. We shall have a look at some of the causes of groin pain in men to understand this discomforting condition better.


Groin Pain Symptoms


Before going into the details of groin pain causes, we need to understand the symptoms to draw a conclusion that one is actually suffering from the same problem. Also, most of the groin pain symptoms indicate a particular cause that leads to this condition. A radiating pain in the groin region, burning sensation while urinating and observing blood in urine indicate presence of kidney stones. When one is suffering from an infection, it will cause enlargement of the lymph glands. Thus, an enlarged lymph gland in the groin can lead to pain and discomfort in the groin. Another symptom includes a testicular pull. One experiences a sharp pain in either one of the testicles along with nausea, vomiting and lightheadedness. This indicates trauma to the scrotum leading to groin pain in men.


Groin Pain Causes


Now, coming back to our original problem, causes of groin pain in men. There are many health issues that can lead to groin pain. Some of these causes are discussed below in the following paragraphs.


Muscle Strain


Muscle strain is the most common cause of pain in groin. Men who play vigorous games like football, hockey or exercise regularly, and perform squats may suffer from muscle strain. An injury to the muscles around the groin can also lead to groin pain.


Avascular Necrosis


This is a condition that occurs when the bone tissue dies due to lack of blood circulation. This condition occurs when one suffers from a bone fracture or joint dislocation in the hips.


Epididymitis


Epididymitis refers to the condition that is caused due to inflammation or swelling of the tube, epididymis. This tube connects the testicles to the vas deferens. An infection can lead to this swelling, where groin pain is one of the many symptoms experienced due to this condition.


Inflammation of the Large and Small Intestine


Inflammation of the intestine due to an infection can lead to pain in the lower abdominal area. As the groin muscles are present right below the lower abdomen and end at the beginning of your legs, the pressure in the abdomen can lead to pain in the groin.


Inguinal Hernia


Inguinal hernia is the condition where any part of an organ in the abdomen, tissue or structure begins to intrude into the space that holds the spermatic cord. The protrusion can move into the scrotum and lead to sharp groin pain.


Kidney Stone


As mentioned earlier, kidney stones are one of the common causes of groin pain. The stones tend to obstruct the flow of urine in urethra and the pressure leads to groin pain in men.


Hydrocele


The fluid filled sac around the testicle is called a hydrocele. Most of the time hydroceles tend to disappear on their own and cause no pain. However, when it leads to scrotal swelling, it leads to groin pain and requires treatment.


Testicular Cancer


Groin pain in men on their right side may be a sign of testicular cancer. However, do not think of this pain on the right side as an indicator for cancer. If one suffers from heaviness in the scrotum, change in size and shape of testes and dull groin pain, it may be a sign of testicular cancer. Sometimes, an undescended testicle can lead to groin pain in men on their left side or even their right side.

There can be various other causes like sprains and strains, pinched nerves, retractile testicle, sciatica, tendinitis, variocele, spermatocele, urinary tract infection, etc. leading to groin pain.
