We all know that colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that is used to detect abnormalities of the colon. This procedure allows the doctor to check for abnormalities on the inner surfaces of the colon and rectum, like colon polyps, colon cancer, etc. This involves use of a special tool called a colonoscope that is inserted through the anus and advanced through the entire length of the colon and rectum. The camera attached to the colonoscope sends images that are displayed on the monitor and these images will be closely evaluated by a doctor, so as to find any abnormalities. The colon has to be empty during this procedure, so that the doctor gets a clear view of the colon wall. So, this procedure involves some bowel preparation, in order to ensure accurate results. A defective preparation may require the patient to repeat the entire procedure. This article will provide you with some colonoscopy prep instructions.

Instructions for Colonoscopy Prep

As mentioned above, a proper colonoscopy preparation is required for accurate results. So, the colon has to be emptied as per the instructions of the doctor. Even though the aim of this preparation is to empty the bowels completely, the methods adopted may vary from one patient to another. So, it is very important to strictly follow the instructions of the doctor, regarding prep for colonoscopy procedure. The following are some colonoscopy prep instructions that can provide you with a basic idea about the subject.

Colonoscopy preparation involves purchasing the required materials (laxatives, tissues) well in advance, arranging a ride or an escort for the day (as the procedure involves mild sedation), etc. But, the most important part of colonoscopy preparation is the cleansing of bowels and diet change. A colonoscopy prep diet is often recommended for patients, who have to undergo colonoscopy. While, some of them will be instructed to switch over to such diet a week prior to the procedure, some others have to stick to this diet for three days only. In some cases, the patients are advised to start the clear liquid diet for colonoscopy only the day before the date fixed for the procedure. This diet consists of fruit juices without pulp (apple, cranberry, white grapes, etc. are good), chicken broth, tea or coffee (without milk), Jell-O (no red color), soda pop, etc. You must totally avoid solid food.

You must also inform the doctor about any current medication you may be taking. You may be advised to stop taking iron, vitamin E and other supplements a week prior to colonoscopy. Sometimes, you may also be required to stop taking ginger, garlic, whole grains, popcorn, nuts, seeds, etc., during the days preceding this diagnostic procedure. Colonoscopy prep instructions may also include stopping the use of anti-inflammatory medications during this time. However, all these should be done as per the instructions of your doctor only. In most cases, on the day before the colonoscopy procedure, the patient will be on a liquid diet and during the evening, he/she has to start the laxatives (as prescribed by the doctor). Once you take the laxatives, you will have frequent liquid bowel movements and you have to stay near the bathroom for at least two to three hours. Keep soft tissues (preferably wet) handy. Use clear liquids to avoid dehydration that can be caused by these bowel movements. Make sure to stop taking any liquids, three hours before the colonoscopy procedure.

The above said is only a brief overview of colonoscopy prep instructions, which may vary slightly from one patient to another. So, it is very important to follow the colonoscopy prep tips given by your doctor. A properly done colonoscopy preparation will help the doctor with a clear view of the colon and the results will also be accurate. Otherwise, you may have to repeat the procedure, or else go for some other alternative procedures.
